Flat on flat logs can be stacked up from foundation to gables with excellent alignment; offering straight, level construction. Even short sections between window or doors are solid, stable, and shrink at the same rate throughout the house. Kootenai’s logs are dead standing so shrinkage is minimized, and since there is no settling of logs as in full scribe construction, the overall shrinkage of the log wall is greatly reduced. Compared to full scribe log walls, where only the outside edges of the scribed log contact the log below it, or chink style where the chinking provides support, the flat on flat log walls provide the best shear and buckling resistance available in a log home. They can therefore handle greater point loads and extreme forces from wind or earthquake. This exceptional stability allow Kootenai Log Homes to easily build log walls all the way up the gable ends to the peak log. No frame gable walls as is the norm with full scribe or chink construction. Every Kootenai log home is 100% log on the exterior wall. Kootenai Log Homes uses cases of construction adhesive and spray foam on each home and recommends a ½ inch flexible chink or caulk on the outside of each log course.
Using these modern materials in conjunction with the wide surface contact area of flat on flat construction creates one of the tightest, most energy efficient log home possible! There are also fewer crevices for our little insect friends to live in. A Kootenai Log Home can be erected more quickly than most other construction styles, resulting in labor cost savings. Kootenai is also one of the few log home manufacturers that offer solid log gables with authentic log roof systems.
